A specialized war and conflict monitoring organization has reported that the death toll from the Sudanese war has surpassed 18,760 since the conflict erupted last year. This figure is 2,110 higher than the last recorded statistic released by the monitor at the end of May, which stood at 16,650.

In its latest report on Monday, the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) stated that Sudan has witnessed over 6,760 battles since the war began in April 2023.

The monitor added that there were more than 400 military clashes over a span of 35 days, from June 1 to July 5, 2024, resulting in over 1,280 reported fatalities.

ACLED highlighted that most of the violence occurred in Khartoum and North Darfur states during the reporting period, with 150 clashes reported in Khartoum state resulting in 246 deaths, and 99 clashes in North Darfur state resulting in 508 deaths.

Due to the absence of official local records for war casualties in Sudan, ACLED has become the primary source for estimating the death toll in the Sudanese conflict, though it notes that the actual numbers are likely higher.

A report prepared by independent UN observers and presented to the UN Security Council in January indicated that between 10,000 and 15,000 people were killed in the city of Geneina in West Darfur last year. Some estimates suggest that the death toll could be as high as 150,000, according to the US Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello.
