The United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, announced an additional 203 million in humanitarian aid for civilians affected by the conflict in Sudan, including refugees and others who have fled to neighboring countries.

A statement issued by the ambassador on Thursday indicated that more than 178 million of the aid comes from the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, while around 25 million is provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Linda Thomas-Greenfield stated, "The people of Sudan are facing the worst humanitarian crisis in the world... We hope this new round of assistance will serve as a call to action for others to follow our lead."

The United States is the largest single donor to the emergency response in Sudan.

International news reports noted that this additional funding raises the total US funding for civilians in Sudan, Chad, Egypt, and South Sudan to 707 million since last October.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield pointed out that "three months after the pledging conference held on April 15 in Paris, only two-thirds of the pledges have been disbursed, and about a quarter of the response has been funded." "Access to humanitarian aid, already severely restricted by the parties to the conflict, is at risk of further contraction."

Meanwhile, Julieta Valls Noyes, Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration, after her recent visit to the region, said, "The United States is committed to continuing support for those who have been displaced and is grateful to those in the region who are generously hosting people from Sudan."
