Ramadan Lamamra, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan, announced on Friday the conclusion of indirect talks between the warring Sudanese parties in Geneva, Switzerland, regarding the facilitation of humanitarian aid access throughout Sudan.

In a statement, Lamamra said the discussions, held from July 11 to 19, 2024, consisted of 20 sessions with delegations from both sides. However, he did not provide details about the content of the talks or whether any agreements were reached.

Lamamra stated that "the discussions held in Geneva are an encouraging initial step in a longer and more complex process."

He added, "I am encouraged by the parties willingness to engage with me on these critical issues, as well as the commitments made to address some specific requests we presented to them."

The topics discussed included measures to ensure the distribution of humanitarian aid to all needy Sudanese populations and procedures to ensure the protection of civilians across Sudan.

The UN envoy emphasized that the humanitarian situation in Sudan remains dire and is deteriorating day by day.

He added, "Urgent action is needed to ensure the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to all those in need and to guarantee the protection of all civilians in Sudan."
