United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed outrage over the death of three World Food Programme (WFP) staff members in Sudan on December 19. The staff members were killed when an airstrike hit the agency’s field office in Yerbas, Blue Nile State.

According to Stéphane Dujarric, the Secretary-General’s spokesperson, Guterres condemned all attacks on UN personnel, aid workers, and facilities, and called for a thorough investigation.

A statement from Dujarric highlighted that the incident underscores the devastating toll of the brutal conflict in Sudan on millions in need and the humanitarian workers striving to reach them with life-saving assistance.

He stated, “The year 2024 has become the deadliest on record for aid workers in Sudan.” Despite the severe threats to their personal safety, he acknowledged the continued efforts of humanitarian workers to deliver critical support wherever it is needed.

The Secretary-General called on both parties to adhere to their commitments to protect civilians, including aid workers, as well as humanitarian supplies and facilities.

He reiterated the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire and emphasized the United Nations’ continued support for international mediation efforts and collaboration with all relevant stakeholders to help end the war.
