``OSHA`` condemns continued attacks on civilians in the Sudan

The United Nations Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in the Sudan, Ms. Clementine Nkwita Salami, expressed deep concern at reports of reprisal attacks against civilians in Al Jazeera State based on alleged affiliation or ethnicity and raised serious concerns about flagrant violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.

Salami said, "I strongly condemn any form of violence against civilians", adding, "Civilians must be protected in armed conflict. reprisals, acts of violence against the civilian population and civilian objectives are prohibited under international humanitarian law ".

Other reports indicate a large number of civilian casualties, property destruction and further displacement of vulnerable persons due to continued shelling and air attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure in many parts of the country, including western Omdurman in Khartoum State, Marwi in Northern State, Atbara in River Nile State and Darfur.

Ms. Nkuita Salami emphasized that "the ongoing violence throughout the Sudan continues to cause enormous suffering. We must act now to stop the bloodshed and protect civilians. "

She reiterated the call for a cessation of hostilities and for genuine and comprehensive steps towards the lasting peace that the Sudanese people desperately needed.
