U.S. to impose sanctions on Sudanese leader Burhan

Moatinoon - Agencies
Sudanese leader and army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan will be hit with sanctions by the United States on Thursday, three sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

The reason for the move was the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure and denial of aid access, as well as refusal to participate in peace talks last year, one of the sources, a diplomat, said.

Last week, the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the Treasury imposed sanctions on Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo Musa (Hemeti), commander of the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces, under Executive Order No. 14098,

According to the United States resolution, Hamidis Rapid Support Forces (RSF), nearly two years ago, engaged in a brutal armed conflict with the Sudanese armed forces to control the Sudan, killing tens of thousands, displacing 12 million Sudanese and causing widespread famine.

The United States Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, held leadership responsible for the acts, which he described as hateful and illegal to his forces.

"The United States continues to call for an end to this conflict, which endangers the lives of innocent civilians," said Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Ademu. "The Treasury remains committed to using every available tool to hold accountable those responsible for violating the human rights of the Sudanese people."

Along with the Commander of the Rapid Support Forces, the United States Treasury imposed sanctions on seven companies and one individual associated with the Rapid Support Forces.
