Cautious Calm in Juba as Hundreds of Sudanese Shelter at Army Headquarters

While some Sudanese-owned shops in Juba have resumed business, hundreds of Sudanese nationals remain sheltered at military and police facilities in the capital.

A source told Mowatinoun that a limited number of Sudanese shops reopened today in Juba amidst a visible security presence in the markets, noting that a cautious calm prevails. However, sporadic gunfire can still be heard occasionally.

Meanwhile, hundreds of Sudanese remain sheltered at the South Sudan Army Headquarters in Juba. The South Sudan Peoples Defense Forces announced on Friday that they are housing approximately 600 Sudanese nationals at the armys main headquarters, while police reported that 45 Sudanese nationals are being protected at police stations in Juba. Another 58 Sudanese nationals are taking refuge at a police station in Bor, the capital of Jonglei State, as well as at the residence of the state governor.

Local media reported today that dozens of Sudanese citizens who sought refuge at police stations in Juba on Thursday night for protection had returned to their homes by Sunday morning, according to a South Sudan police spokesperson.

Additionally, local press sources on Saturday stated that the government of Western Bahr el Ghazal State launched a wide-scale inspection campaign this morning in several neighborhoods of Wau, aimed at recovering looted properties.

Major General Akol, Director of Police for Western Bahr el Ghazal State, confirmed the success of the forces in retrieving some of the stolen goods.
