67 Dead and Dozens Injured in Drone Attack on El Fasher Hospital

The death toll from the attack carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the Saudi Hospital in the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, has risen to 67.

The Coordination of Resistance Committees in El Fasher reported that the RSF targeted the Saudi Hospital with a strategic drone strike on Friday evening. The attack completely destroyed the emergency and trauma department, rendering it inoperative.

Just a few weeks ago, the same building was struck by a drone belonging to the RSF.

Since April 2023, the Sudanese army has been engaged in a war with the RSF, which has seized control of nearly the entire vast western Darfur region.

The RSF has been besieging El Fasher since May of last year, but they have been unable to capture the city as militias allied with the army have repeatedly repelled their advances.

The attacks have severely impacted healthcare services in El Fasher. Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) stated earlier this month that the Saudi Hospital is "the only public hospital still offering surgical services."

According to official figures, 80% of healthcare facilities across the country are out of service due to the war.

In the area surrounding El Fasher, famine has already taken hold in three displaced persons camps—Zamzam, Abu Shouk, and Salam—and is expected to spread to five more areas, including the city itself, by May, according to a UN-supported assessment.
