Attacks on Health Care in Sudan, 08-21 January 2025

Insecurity Insight identified 521 attacks on Sudans health care system since fighting started between Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023 and 26 November 2024. Around two thirds of these incidents were attributed to the RSF. SAF forces were also named, but less often. At least 119 health workers, including doctors, nurses and pharmacists were killed while working inside hospitals, clinics, or their homes. Health facilities were damaged 129 times, mostly by RSF-launched explosive weapons. Some health facilities, such as the Saudi Obstetrics and Gynaecology Hospital and Zalingei Hospital, were damaged on more than one occasion.

10 January 2025: In the Mayo area, Khartoum city and state, MSF announced the suspension of all its activities at the Bashair Teaching Hospital.

Around 13 January 2025: In Wad Medani city, Al Jazirah state, a doctor was tortured by the SAF and Sudan Shield Forces on accusations of being an RSF fighter.

13 January 2025: In Abu Shouk IDP camp, Al Fashir city, North Darfur state, a children’s malnutrition centre was damaged in the evening by RSF shelling.

15 January 2025: In Kordofan region, a female pharmacist was threatened with being kidnapped and raped by RSF fighters, who then stole money from the pharmacy.

As reported on 17 January 2025: In Wad Medani city, Al Jazirah state, the library of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Gezira was vandalised, damaged and looted by the RSF.

17 January 2025: In Al-Qalqalah village, Al Kamlin district, Al Jazirah state, Doha Clinic was stormed and a female doctor and another young man kidnapped by the RSF.

18 January 2025: At the Girba Dam, Kassala state, an attack on a hydroelectric facility cut off power to hospitals and health facilities.

As reported on 18 January 2025: In Wad Medani city, Al Jazirah state, the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Gezira was damaged by the RSF.

21 January 2025: In Al-Fuqara village, Al Hasahisa town, Al Jazirah state, Talbab Health Center, was looted by militia. Solar energy systems for water wells and Starlink satellite internet devices were also looted and damaged in the village.
