The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, has condemned the attack on the Sabreen market and residential neighborhoods in Omdurman, which resulted in the deaths of at least 60 people and left more than 150 others injured.

This statement, titled "Urgent Call to End the War on Civilians in Sudan," was issued by the UN official on Sunday, February 2, 2025, from her residence in Port Sudan.

She also denounced the killing of dozens of civilians in attacks in El-Obeid and Um Rawaba in North Kordofan State, as well as in North Darfur and South Darfur, between January 30 and February 1, 2025.

Nkweta-Salami stated that these attacks constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law, calling for those responsible for these grave crimes to be held accountable.

She added that the deliberate targeting of civilian areas is a blatant disregard for human life and the most basic principles of the laws of war, stressing that such atrocities must stop immediately.

The UN official reiterated her call on all parties involved in the war in Sudan to avoid targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure and to uphold their responsibilities under international humanitarian law by taking all possible measures to protect civilians.

Calling for an end to the war, she stated, "The suffering of Sudanese civilians has gone on for too long. It is time to end this war and prevent further destruction."
