Sudanese refugees in Aftet camp in Ethiopias Amhar region were subjected to an armed attack yesterday evening. A source told "Moatinoon" that an armed group attacked the camp at around 9 pm.

The gunmen targeted the club where the refugees were staying, and two refugees were injured with varying degrees of injury as a result of being shot. The source said that the gunmen looted more than 150 mobile phones belonging to the refugees.

This is the first attack of its kind after the refugees were deported from the Olala and Komer camps due to the deteriorating security situation after the refugees in them were subjected to repeated attacks by Ethiopian groups rebelling against the center, which led to the death of many of them and the injury of dozens.

The process of deporting refugees from Komer camp to Aftet camp, located in the Amhara region, began in July of last year, after arrangements by the Department of Refugees and Returnees of the Ethiopian government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The Ethiopian government and UNHCR issued a joint statement on July 20, stressing that the new site has good specifications to enhance the security and protection of refugees.

The Ethiopian government said that the Komer and Olala camps will be gradually closed to ensure adequate security and protection and improve services and assistance for those forced to flee the camps.

The Sudanese Refugees Facebook page reported that the Ethiopian government has failed to establish a permanent police station to provide security in the camps. It warned that the new developments could destabilize the camp.

In a related context, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and its partners continue to transfer refugees from the “Transit” reception camp adjacent to the Sudanese border to the Aftet camp in Shahidi in the Amhara region in Ethiopia.

The Commission and its partners began the transfer operations on December 17 from Transit to Aftet for reasons related to the continuation of education services.
