The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate has renewed its call for the immediate and unconditional release of journalist Moammar Ibrahim, who has entered his fourth week in detention by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a statement today, the syndicate said that his continued detention constitutes “a flagrant violation of international law and journalists’ rights, and a crime against freedom of expression.”
The syndicate rejected the use of journalists as hostages, calling it “completely unacceptable.”
It stressed its rejection of any attempts to turn journalists into tools of blackmail or threats to public freedoms, warning of the growing pattern of systematic targeting of journalists in Sudan.
The statement affirmed that “press freedom is not subject to negotiation or compromise,” adding that the world is watching and history will hold accountable those who suppress the truth.
The syndicate confirmed that it will pursue all legal avenues, both domestically and internationally, to hold those responsible for such violations to account.
It also called on the international community and human rights and media organizations to show solidarity with the detained journalist and take action to end his suffering and ensure his physical and psychological safety.
