EU Calls for Including Support to Independent Media in Sudan

Three years into the war in Sudan, the country is facing what is described as the world’s most severe and under-reported humanitarian crisis. In this context, the European Union has stressed the indispensable role of independent media in providing reliable, fact-based information during the conflict and in the transition toward sustainable peace.
The EU urged that its commitment to “increased engagement” be translated into concrete action at the upcoming EU Ministerial Conference on Sudan, scheduled to take place in Berlin on April 15, 2026, by making support for independent media a core element of the international response.
According to the statement, social media platforms such as Meta’s WhatsApp and Facebook are being used by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to spread misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech. Both sides have reportedly created numerous fake websites and social media accounts to manipulate public opinion and fuel divisions.
The EU called for meaningful and sustained support for independent Sudanese media across civilian, humanitarian, and political tracks, including, Systematic and meaningful engagement of media actors in the design and implementation of civilian stakeholder platforms and peace processes, recognition of access to reliable information as a component of humanitarian aid, establishment of dedicated funding mechanisms to support independent Sudanese media.
The statement emphasized that the war in Sudan is not a civil war but a war against civilians, and that independent media play a crucial role in amplifying civilian voices in a militarized information environment. Reliable information also serves as a foundation for reconciliation, public trust, and social cohesion in a future civilian-led Sudan.
It further noted that the spread of misinformation is obstructing humanitarian aid delivery and eroding trust within communities. In contrast, access to accurate information can be lifesaving, helping people navigate insecurity, displacement, and access to services.
On the political front, independent media are vital in documenting war crimes and violations of international humanitarian law, thereby supporting accountability and justice. With much of Sudan’s media infrastructure destroyed and journalists displaced, independent outlets operating in exile have become essential sources of credible information for policymakers and international decision-makers.
