Gash River Flood Threatens Villages in Kassala State

The threat of the Gash River flooding remains high due to the rising water levels from heavy rains in Eritrea, endangering all villages surrounding the river.
As of 3:00 AM today, Friday, the Gash Rivers water level reached 290 cm, causing a breach in the Maqawda and Dar Man areas south of Kassala State in eastern Sudan.
State authorities quickly dispatched emergency relief supplies, including food baskets and tarpaulins, to the residents of Maqawda after around 250 families were affected by the river’s flooding yesterday. The families have since been evacuated to higher ground, according to statements made by the state governor, Major General Al-Sadiq Al-Azraq.
The Director of Civil Defense in the state, Brigadier General Badawi Mohammed Hussein, noted that the rivers water level rose again at 5:00 AM today at the bridge point, reaching 290 cm due to the heavy rains currently affecting the Eritrean highlands. This increase in water levels poses a significant risk to vulnerable areas. He reiterated his call for all residents in the northern localities of the state to exercise caution, avoid the Gash River and its tributaries to protect lives and property, and refrain from swimming in the rivers waters.
