The World Food Programme (WFP) announced today that two food convoys are set to head to the Darfur states to support half a million Sudanese people in Darfur.

Both the World Food Programme and the World Health Organization welcomed reports that Sudanese authorities will open the Adré border crossing from Chad into Sudan to deliver aid to those in need in western Sudan.

Speaking at a UN press conference in Geneva via video link from Nairobi on Friday, WFP spokesperson in Sudan, Leni Kinzli, stated that this vital humanitarian corridor would allow the program to scale up aid to 14 areas facing famine conditions or at risk of famine in Darfur, Kordofan, Khartoum, and Al Jazira states.

The spokesperson explained that "two convoys carrying nearly 6,000 metric tons of food and nutritional supplies for about half a million people are being loaded and will head to famine-threatened areas in North, Central, and West Darfur once official government communications and approvals are received."

Kinzli expressed hope that they would "see the actual opening of the Adré crossing and trucks moving across the border as soon as possible."

She added: "More than 50 trucks carrying an estimated 4,800 metric tons of food and nutritional aid, enough for around half a million people, are stuck in various locations across Sudan, unable to reach their final destinations due to flooded and impassable roads."
