UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has called for "urgent international solidarity to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, ensuring that aid can flow freely to millions of people trapped in conflict zones and those fleeing these areas."
Her remarks came at the conclusion of her visit to Sudanese refugee camps in Chad on Friday, where she met with Chadian authorities, refugees, and representatives of host communities in Adré, eastern Chad. She was accompanied by the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan, Ramlan Lamamra, and a delegation from UN agencies working in humanitarian aid. During the visit, she also emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of aid workers.
Mohammed announced the allocation of 5 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) as part of a rapid response to support flood recovery efforts.
She stressed the importance of keeping the Adré border crossing open permanently to facilitate humanitarian aid, noting that this crossing is a vital lifeline for delivering aid to millions in Sudan. She described the recent reopening of the border between Sudan and Chad as a positive step towards this goal.
