In his first move... Security Council imposes sanctions on Osman “Amaliat”

On Friday, the UN Security Council imposed sanctions on two RSF commanders for destabilizing the country through violence and human rights violations.

These are the first United Nations sanctions imposed in the current war in the Sudan, which erupted in April 2023 due to a power struggle between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces before the planned transition to civilian rule.

The Sudan Sanctions Committee, composed of 15 members of the Security Council, approved a United States proposal made at the end of August to impose an international travel ban and assets freeze on RSF Operations Commander Osman Mohamed Hamid Mohamed and West Darfur RSF Commander Abdul Rahman Juma lah.

The Committees decisions were unanimous, and diplomats had said that Russia had postponed that step because it wanted more time to study the proposal.

The war in the Sudan has led to waves of ethnic violence, which have been largely blamed on the Rapid Support Forces, which deny harm to civilians and attribute this to "rogue" parties.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the alleged attacks on civilians by the RSF days ago, while Britain said it would push for a Security Council resolution on the conflict.
