Irish Photographer Wins Prestigious Award for Coverage of Sudan War

A French photojournalism festival honored several reports from Gaza, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Among the many awards at the Visa pour lImage photojournalism festival in Perpignan, the prestigious Visa dOr News Award was given to Ivor Prickett of The New York Times for his work on the war in Sudan. The International Committee of the Red Crosss Visa dOr Humanitarian Award was also given to Saher El-Ghorra for his work in the Gaza Strip, while George Steinmetz received a lifetime achievement award.

The Irish photographer, who was awarded the award for his coverage of the battle for Khartoum, which took place between 2023 and 2025 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for control of the countrys capital, expressed his "great surprise" and said the award was a "great honor."

He added: "For my work on Sudan, the problem was access to this war. Im lucky to have been able to access it."

His photographs depict daily life during the civil war, including the physical destruction and, more importantly, the suffering of a people trying to survive in extremely difficult conditions, maintaining their "strength despite what is happening."
