The International Organization for Migration announced yesterday that 581 families have been displaced and 631 homes have been partially or completely destroyed by floods and rains that swept through two states in eastern and western Sudan.
The organization said in a statement that the heavy rains and floods that hit the village of Wad al-Shaer in the Rahad locality of Gedaref State the day before yesterday displaced 500 families and completely or partially destroyed 500 homes.
It added that the village of Mabrouka, near the city of Al-Faw in Gedaref, witnessed the displacement of 17 families after 17 homes were partially or completely damaged by the rains and floods.
In a separate statement, the organization explained that the floods that swept through the village of Tartoura, in Katila County, South Darfur State, displaced 64 families, completely destroyed 64 homes, and partially damaged 50 others.
Sudan typically experiences heavy rains during the autumn season, which extends from June to October, causing widespread flooding.
These natural disasters exacerbate the suffering of Sudanese people, who have been suffering under the weight of a war that has been ongoing since mid-April 2023 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces. According to the United Nations, the war has left more than 20,000 dead and approximately 15 million displaced and refugees. Research by American universities estimates the death toll at around 130,000.
