13 million Sudanese children out of school for over two years

The organization "Save the Children" has stated that more than three-quarters of school-aged children in Sudan are either at home or in temporary shelters, warning that many of them are at risk of not completing their education.
A new analysis by the organization, which is part of the Global Education Cluster, published on Thursday, showed that around 13 million out of 17 million school-aged children have been out of school for more than two years due to the ongoing conflict, mass displacement, and the collapse of educational infrastructure.
The Global Education Cluster is a coordinating body of 60 NGOs, UN agencies, and other partners, led by Save the Children and UNICEF, that works to support education in humanitarian crisis areas and is based in Geneva.
According to the report, about seven million children are enrolled in schools but are unable to attend, while another six million have never enrolled in any educational institution at all, which threatens a whole generation with the loss of educational opportunities.
The organization explained that one in every 10 schools is being used to shelter displaced people, which means that more than 55% of schools remain closed. Some have been converted into shelters for the displaced, while the education system faces additional challenges with the flood season and damaged infrastructure.
Mohamed Abdel Latif, the country director for the organization in Sudan, said, "If the conflict continues, millions will be deprived of learning opportunities, exposing them to the risks of recruitment by armed groups, sexual violence, and early labor."
He added, "We are extremely concerned about the future of these children and the future of Sudan if this conflict does not end immediately."
The organization once again called on the international community to double pressure for a ceasefire and to ensure safe access to humanitarian aid, stressing that saving the future of millions of children in Sudan requires an end to the conflict and enabling them to return to their school desks.
